It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of
Gosse Bouma
One of the things that Gosse liked most was cycling. He died as a result of a terrible crash during an off-road cycling trip.
Gosse was a highly valued researcher, teacher, and colleague. He was a core member of the Alfa Informatica (later Information Science) programme and of the Computational Linguistics group (GroNLP) in Groningen.
He was a highly respected scientist, as evidenced by his widely cited publications, such as those in the fields of computational syntax, Dutch question-answering systems, and the Semantic Web. Moreover, he played a key role in the development of software and annotated corpora. Together with a colleague from Flanders, he authored an influential research report for the Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) that laid the foundation for digital resources for the Dutch language. He also contributed the first resources for Dutch as part of the Universal Dependencies framework.
As a teacher, he mentored many students across Alfa Informatica, Information Science, Cognitive Science, and Artificial Intelligence programs. He served for a long time as coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme in Language and Communication Technologies and supported hundreds of highly talented students as they embarked on their careers.
We have lost a wonderful colleague and friend who with his cheerful, active, and positive nature, was someone others could always rely on.

Gosse was een uitzonderlijke onderzoeker, docent en collega, wiens inzet en toewijding een onuitwisbare indruk hebben achtergelaten. Hij was een onmisbare steunpilaar voor de opleiding Alfa-informatica (later Informatiekunde) en het onderzoek op het gebied van computationele taalkunde in Groningen.
Zijn wetenschappelijke bijdragen, met name op het gebied van computationele syntaxis, Nederlandstalige vraag-antwoordsystemen en het Semantic Web, werden wereldwijd erkend en veelvuldig geciteerd.
Naast zijn academische verdiensten speelde Gosse een sleutelrol in de ontwikkeling van software en geannoteerd corpusmateriaal. Samen met een Vlaamse collega schreef hij een invloedrijk onderzoeksrapport voor de Taalunie, dat de basis legde voor de digitale basismaterialen voor het Nederlands. Daarnaast droeg hij bij aan de eerste Nederlandstalige bronnen binnen het wereldwijd gebruikte Universal Dependencies framework.
Als docent begeleidde hij talloze studenten binnen de opleidingen Alfa-informatica, Informatiekunde, Technische Cognitiewetenschap en Artificial Intelligence. Hij was jarenlang coördinator van de Erasmus Mundus masteropleiding Language and Communication Technologies en heeft honderden getalenteerde studenten geïnspireerd en ondersteund bij het begin van hun loopbaan.
We hebben een geweldige collega en vriend verloren die met zijn vrolijke, actieve en positieve karakter iemand was op wie anderen altijd konden bouwen.

I was shocked to learn this from the Corpora-List, where Gosse sometimes posted. It is very unfortunate.
Gosse was calm and always helpful. He initiated a very positive part of my PhD study at Alfa-Informatica. He found a workshop in my research area (Named Entities and Transliteration) and shared it with me; it then became a major motivator and facilitator during the most productive three years of my study. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues at Alfa-Informatica.

I am truly shocked and saddened to hear about Gosse’s passing. I disctinctly remember a PhD course taught by him (and Gertjan) in Utrecht on computational grammars (it must be more than 30 years ago), where I was impressed with his passion for research, his great clarity and above all his gentle friendliness. This impression was only reinforced in later interactions we had at research meetings and conferences. This is a great loss and I want to wish his family, friends and colleagues in Groningen much strength.

I am really shocked by this very sad piece of news!
I knew Gosse very well! I worked with him very closely in the Erasmus Mundus Masters Program in Language and Communication Technologies (LCT), when I was coordinating it from Saarbrücken. He was one of the best colleagues I had in this framework.
I am speechless and very very sad by the news.

It seems unreal that the "gentle giant" from Groningen will not be around at the next conference. Above his many qualities like his competence, experience, and creative brilliance, Gosse irradiated a special kindness who you could feel in the room he was in. Gosse's calm presence is deeply missed by the entire GroNLP family. As many already said, he was unique in his ability to face anything with his gentle, calm and steady nature. I have never seem him angry or upset, he has never raised his voice. Under different circumstances, he would be the one to calm us down right now. He would be the rock to whom we could all turn. Gosse had such a comforting voice, I cannot believe yet that it will never be heard again in our corridor. Despite being way junior to him, Gosse never made me feel inferior or that my experience did not matter. He treated everyone with so much respect. Gosse really was a kind of gentleman that is hard to find today.
To his family: I wish you all the strength in the world, and hope you find comfort in each other in this hard time. Please know that our doors will always be open to you to come and remember Gosse together.

Ik ken Gosse al vanaf de tijd dat hij een scriptie schreef over woordvolgorde in het Warlpiri. We deelden een belangstelling in categoriale grammatica en hpsg. Hij was altijd een goede collega, een Grote Vriendelijke Reus, en een fijn mens. Onvoorstelbaar en diep verdrietig dat hij niet meer onder ons is.

It’s a real shock!
I have worked with Gosse during my PhD and he actually introduced me to NLP, being myself from FEB. We coauthored several papers and attended multiple conferences together.
As a young PhD at that time, Gosse’s presence was very reassuring, and i always looked forward to our meetings.
More importantly, we cycled together during weekends or public holidays.
He was always caring and making sure people felt comfortable.
Thanks for everything Gosse. Our memories of cycling together, and discussing about research will live on.

When I heard the news of Gosse's passing, my first reaction was one of complete and utter disbelief. How can someone so steady and calm be gone in a an instant? How can someone who always gave his time and attention be denied a little more time himself?
I can only begin to imagine what emptiness Gosse leaves behind and wish all Gosse's family, friends and colleagues a lot of strength to work through this loss. Rust zacht!

Whenever I think back at my time with Alfa-Informatica in Groningen, I see a group of wonderful people with Gosse's head sticking out, overseeing them all. Gertjan once playfully referred to you as our "opperhoofd" (our big chief), a title worn by someone who keeps a group together and leads it to the next frontier. I don't think this could have been said better. Thank you Gosse - you will be deeply missed, by those close to you, but also by those farther away in time and space.

I am extremely shocked by the sudden passing of Gosse, my former co-promotor. His love and passion for biking always impressed me, as much as his humble attitude towards hard work, and his being both a true humanities scholar and a true computer scientist.

Het is onwerkelijk om te realiseren dat Gosse is overleden. De altijd stabiele, weloverwogen en humorvolle collega is niet meer. Een ongelooflijk gemis voor allen die hem hebben gekend. Ik wens zijn familie, vrienden en collega's heel veel sterkte.

It is hard, impossible, to imagine Gosse not being among the familiar faces at national NLP events. Gosse has stood as one of the steadiest, most reliable pillars of the CLIN community, with the most friendly and constructive attitude imaginable. His research, and the work he built with others, shaped Dutch NLP. I wish all colleagues in Groningen the strength to cope with this untimely loss.

Het is een bizarre schok om een van de sterkste mensen ooit zo veel te vroeg het leven te zien verlaten. Je was de ijzersterke ondergrond waarop de onderzoeksgroep kon steunen en daarnaast altijd een uitzonderlijk warm persoon. Ik houd je in mijn gedachten en zal je missen, Gosse.

Every person brings to the world a unique frequency. That of Gosse was one of calm and steady presence. A kind of presence that doesn’t seek to take the stage, that listens patiently and responds respectfully. The frequency of Gosse was so rooted in the identity of our group and its open and welcoming nature, that I only now start to understand what we have suddenly lost.
