It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of
Gosse Bouma
One of the things that Gosse liked most was cycling. He died as a result of a terrible crash during an off-road cycling trip.
Gosse was a highly valued researcher, teacher, and colleague. He was a core member of the Alfa Informatica (later Information Science) programme and of the Computational Linguistics group (GroNLP) in Groningen.
He was a highly respected scientist, as evidenced by his widely cited publications, such as those in the fields of computational syntax, Dutch question-answering systems, and the Semantic Web. Moreover, he played a key role in the development of software and annotated corpora. Together with a colleague from Flanders, he authored an influential research report for the Taalunie (Dutch Language Union) that laid the foundation for digital resources for the Dutch language. He also contributed the first resources for Dutch as part of the Universal Dependencies framework.
As a teacher, he mentored many students across Alfa Informatica, Information Science, Cognitive Science, and Artificial Intelligence programs. He served for a long time as coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Master’s programme in Language and Communication Technologies and supported hundreds of highly talented students as they embarked on their careers.
We have lost a wonderful colleague and friend who with his cheerful, active, and positive nature, was someone others could always rely on.

Een van de dingen waar Gosse het meest van hield, was wielrennen. Hij is om het leven gekomen door een ernstig ongeval tijdens een gravel bike tocht.
Gosse was een uitzonderlijke onderzoeker, docent en collega, wiens inzet en toewijding een onuitwisbare indruk hebben achtergelaten. Hij was een onmisbare steunpilaar voor de opleiding Alfa-informatica (later Informatiekunde) en het onderzoek op het gebied van computationele taalkunde in Groningen.
Zijn wetenschappelijke bijdragen, met name op het gebied van computationele syntaxis, Nederlandstalige vraag-antwoordsystemen en het Semantic Web, werden wereldwijd erkend en veelvuldig geciteerd.
Naast zijn academische verdiensten speelde Gosse een sleutelrol in de ontwikkeling van software en geannoteerd corpusmateriaal. Samen met een Vlaamse collega schreef hij een invloedrijk onderzoeksrapport voor de Taalunie, dat de basis legde voor de digitale basismaterialen voor het Nederlands. Daarnaast droeg hij bij aan de eerste Nederlandstalige bronnen binnen het wereldwijd gebruikte Universal Dependencies framework.
Als docent begeleidde hij talloze studenten binnen de opleidingen Alfa-informatica, Informatiekunde, Technische Cognitiewetenschap en Artificial Intelligence. Hij was jarenlang coördinator van de Erasmus Mundus masteropleiding Language and Communication Technologies en heeft honderden getalenteerde studenten geïnspireerd en ondersteund bij het begin van hun loopbaan.
We hebben een geweldige collega en vriend verloren die met zijn vrolijke, actieve en positieve karakter iemand was op wie anderen altijd konden bouwen.

There are few people who are able to radiate such strength and calm, while at the same time being a rock for everyone around them. Gosse was one of those rare people.
I am deeply saddened by this shocking news. It is heartbreaking. It is way too early.
Gosse shaped AI-staff (alfa informatica) in a unique way. He was infinitely kind and supportive, a wonderful teacher, and a wonderful researcher whose work was steady and stood the test of time.
I am grateful to Gosse for many things. First and foremost, for connecting me with Alfa-informatica in the first place, and with the PhD position with Gertjan, an experience and opportunity for which I remain deeply grateful. In later years, we also thaught "Computationele grammatica" together.
I am deeply thankful to Gosse. Rest in peace.

Dear Gosse, the tallest man in the room, quietly present with something to say at so many LCT meetings and at countless conferences and workshops. As a Strava cyclist I will miss your kudos messages regularly sent but wholly undeserved.

Although I mostly saw Gosse during lunch breaks, I always experienced him as a calm, warm, and kind person. His gentle presence will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who knew him closely.

Het is een bizarre schok om een van de sterkste mensen ooit zo veel te vroeg het leven te zien verlaten. Je was de ijzersterke ondergrond waarop de onderzoeksgroep kon steunen en daarnaast altijd een uitzonderlijk warm persoon. Ik houd je in mijn gedachten en zal je missen, Gosse.

Every person brings to the world a unique frequency. That of Gosse was one of calm and steady presence. A kind of presence that doesn’t seek to take the stage, that listens patiently and responds respectfully. The frequency of Gosse was so rooted in the identity of our group and its open and welcoming nature, that I only now start to understand what we have suddenly lost.
Thanks for helping shape our dear GroNLP group, Gosse!
I will miss you and your door open to the corridor. But I like to think that your special frequency will remain with us for a very long time.

Over the past few days, I’ve been in disbelief, denial, and deep sadness. Gosse was a great colleague, an amazing teacher, and an exceptional researcher. But above all, Gosse was a good person, always curious, supportive, helpful, and fun. I will miss him, and I will cherish dearly the moments we shared. May the earth rest lightly on you.

There is a saying in Chinese that the loss of someone close to us is like a long, damp, unending rain. It is not a sudden pain, but a sadness that quietly settles in and stays with us. Gosse left us in September, during the rainy season in the Netherlands. With his passing, it feels as though another season of rain has begun within me.
Gosse was my second supervisor. It is still almost impossible for me to believe that only last week we were discussing my dissertation. I am deeply grateful for the guidance, kindness, and time Gosse gave me, and for all that he gave to his students, to our research community, and to the world through his work and his presence.
May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones.

Last summer, Gosse shared with us some pictures from his very impressive participation in the 500-km long Pietertocht Extreme. The last picture was one of Gosse sleeping, to recover after this very long cycle. I'd like to think that he is now peacefully sleeping somewhere too, after his very impressive lifelong tour. He will be dearly missed.
