In remembrance of Lars Bechmann
We are deeply saddened to announce that our student Lars Bechmann (Master Nutritional Epidemiology and Public Health – distance learning) passed away suddenly in the evening of the 1st of July at the age of 44. Our thoughts are with his wife Lynn-Katrin and their three children at this most difficult time of loss.Lars managed to combine our Master programme with a position as Head of the section for Metabolic and Preventive Medicine in the department of Medicine in the hospital of Bochum and as Assistant Professor at the Ruhr-University of Bochum. He was keen on learning about new disciplines and he chose this master because he wanted to enhance his statistical and epidemiological knowledge so he could ultimately improve the management of patients with fatty liver disease in the clinic. He believed that this master would make him a better clinical scientist in hepatic metabolism and nutrition research. Besides this career and education he was a family man, he enjoyed travelling, photography and sports such as hiking and cycling.
Lars was ‘the’ example of a lifelong learner, who wanted to keep on growing in knowledge and skills and find new perspectives in order to improve health of his patients. He will be missed by us and our students.

I was surprised and saddened to hear about Lars' sudden passing. Lars was a very pro-active and reliable student with lots of motivation for different topics. I am very happy that I met Lars during the online Public Health courses. My thoughts are with his family.

Returning from summer break, I was deeply shocked to hear about the passing of Lars. Lars is someone I will always remember. I had the great pleasure to talk with him several times, because we shared a strong interest in the role of nutrition in gastro-intestinal diseases, especially connecting fatty liver disease with colorectal cancer. I never knew he had to deal with this horrible disease himself. I will never forget his enthusiasm and drive for his topic, his respect for his patients, as well as his intelligence and very pleasant personality. He will be very much missed in our program. I wish his wife and children all they need to deal with losing Lars.

It is with great sadness that I learned about the passing of Lars. We still had so many ideas and plans for a collaborative research project on fatty liver disease, which we planned to start this year. Lars always shared his ideas and knowledge with humour, great respect and an eager interest in the topic. Lars will be sadly missed by us and many people. I’m very saddened to hear about Lars passing away. I met him (online) two years ago during my course. I realized by reading all the messages here that I didn’t know much about him but I have good memories of Lars. He was indeed a clever student, always polite and respectful. There are no words that can give enough comfort or lightening the heart of his loved ones. I hope that time will bring peace in their life. He will be sadly missed and well remembered. May he rest in peace.

The deeply shocking news of Lars' passing reaches me while being on vacation. I am one of his colleagues at the University Hospital Bochum, and I am very grateful to you in Wageningen for having put this condolence post online.
The previous condolences have already highlighted Lars' deeply positive human qualities. As we had known each other for more than twenty years, I can only confirm and underline everything that has been said.
One of the best has gone - but at an absurdly inopportune time. As is well known, life is not fair - but cancer is one of the most unfair opponents...
My sincere sympathies go out to his wife and children, whom I never got to meet. And to you who worked with him during his studies in Wageningen: keep Lars in good memory.

I'm very sad to learn about Lars's sudden passing. We only connected a few months ago, and he was kind, knowledgable and great to work with. I admired his ability to juggle a busy family and full-time job with the study, and especially his passion to help others in their healing journey. Gone too soon, too young, with so much left to give. Wishing his wife, children, and all his loved ones much light, love and strength in this very sad time.

Ich habe die sehr traurige Nachricht von Lars Tod gerade erhalten. Vor zwei Jahren, wir waren beide mit unseren sehr kleinen Babys zu Hause, haben wir gemeinsam eine Studienarbeit geschrieben. Es war so angenehm mit Lars zu arbeiten! Meine Gedanken sind bei seiner Familie. Auch wenn wir uns nie persönlich kennen gelernt haben, wünsche ich seiner Frau und seinen drei Kindern sehr viel Kraft in dieser schwierigen Zeit!

I am so shocked that Lars has passed away. It's hard to realise and understand that such a good person has left. I remember Lars as a very motivated, friendly and helping student. Once he contacted me to discuss whether it would be allright to withdraw himself from my course because he and his wife were expecting their third child. I could not do other than to agree of course, as I knew how challenging life can be with small kids. I was so impressed that he was able to combine his work,family life and his studies and was looking forward for him to obtain his well-deserved diploma. My thoughts are with his wife, children and loved-ones.

Deeply saddened to hear that Lars has passed away. My thoughts are with his wife and children. As a teacher in our online master program it was a pleasure to teach Lars about Epidemiology and to learn from Lars about fatty liver disease. I was impressed by his eagerness to learn new things and the modest, friendly and respectful way by which he shared his own understandings and excellent knowledge with both his fellow students and teachers. We worked frequently together as distance learning students and will remember him as an empathic person, who always saw the best in other people. His feedback and suggestions were directed to improve the content and very respectful of the other person.

I remember Lars as a fellow-student always willing to share knowledge from his practical experience. We shared a common interest in liver diseases, though from different perspectives. We did some group work together on this topic and I am grateful that I had this opportunity to work with him. He has made me understand more and better ... Thank you again, Lars! I will remember you.
